AAUW Jefferson County Branch Recognized at State Convention for Local Programming
Several members of the Jefferson County Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) represented the North Country at the state convention in April. While at convention the branch accepted a 21st Century NYS Recognition Award for Individual Programs for two recent programs and received overall recognition for their programming.
The group received third place for March’s “A Global Perspective on the Oppression of Women and Girls”; and a first place award for a 2009 presentation “Too Sexy, Too Soon”. Jefferson County was also a platinum winner of the 2009-10 21st Century NYS Recognition Award for Overall Programming.
The 2010 convention was held at Otesaga, in Cooperstown, NY the weekend of April 23 – 25.

“Stories of Strength and Suffering from Sierra Leone and Malawi”
March 23, 2010 the Jefferson County Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) and Jefferson Community College hosted a presentation entitled “A Global Perspective on the Oppression of Women and Girls: Stories of Strength and Suffering from Sierra Leone and Malawi” at JCC. North Country teachers Heather F. White and Renee G. Waterbury traveled to the Republic of Malawi in 2008 as part of team to meet and evaluate the needs of Malawi widows. In May of 2009, Tammie J. Miller, branch director of the Fairgrounds YMCA in Watertown, traveled to Malawi with another group of North Country community members. Katherine M. FitzGerald, adjunct philosophy instructor at JCC, spent January through June of 2009 in Sierra Leone where she taught theology and philosophy as a visiting professor at The Fatima Institute (TFI) in Makeni. More than 60 members of the public attended the free event at JCC.
